Description
Ross Ferris, deceased highwayman, sometime hell-hound and soul reaper, escaped Hell and found sanctuary in a battlefield Church with fellow reaper, Caroline. When the Church is deconsecrated and the ancient battlefield becomes a building site, their freedom is threatened. Pursued by former colleagues, he flees to Fordyce House, hoping to remain undetected under the protection of neutral spirit, Lily.
However, too late he discovers the house is now under the control of his old adversary, Claude. Unable to resist the daemon, he is compelled to return to his old profession: harvesting the wraiths of the newly dead, but not for the usual purpose of sending them to the underworld, and not just those destined for Hell either!
So why is Claude snatching wraiths before Hell’s hounds or Heaven’s pearly poodles, can collect them?
When he discovers the daemon’s true motives, Ross is left with no choice. With time against him and the ever-present threat of being returned to Hell, can he, with the help of the enigmatic Juliette, a motley crew of wraiths from both sides of death’s divide, and his daemon friend, Caffiaes, thwart Claude’s plans before it is too late. An imaginative blend of suspense, humour, action and romance
Ross Ferris is back! And I am sure readers who enjoyed his exploits in The Reluctant Reaper will be delighted by The House of Wraiths, this second book in Denarii Peters’ trilogy. Ross is the ghost of an 18th-century highwayman who has been condemned to Hell. However he has not immediately been dragged into the flames, for Hell has a job for him. As he moves about Earth, gathering souls for his daemon masters, he looks desperately for a way to escape.
Although set in the same supernatural world, I think The House of Wraiths is a little darker than the first book. The stakes have been raised, there are threats to the fragile balance between Hell and Heaven, and a new evil is emerging with no regard for the old ‘rules’. However this only enriches the story-telling, which is full of inventive twists and surprises. Plots and sub-plots are driven along by lively, often humorous, dialogue. Action moves through a variety of settings, many on the temporal plane – battlefields, elegant old houses, the beautiful Cornish coast. And as with The Reluctant Reaper there is a fascinating cast of characters: daemons, angels, the living and the newly dead, wraiths and ghosts of all descriptions. Ross himself is an engaging narrator, for although a ghost, he’s a ghost with very human feelings. Terrified at times, bored at others, selfish, compassionate, lonely, inquisitive. He is also increasingly self-aware. Is he somehow being changed?
This is an original, entertaining book with an imaginative blend of suspense, humour, action and romance. Fans will be left waiting impatiently for Denarii’s next book! (AI)
It pulled me straight back in
I loved the first book, so I went into House of Wraiths really excited—and it didn’t disappoint. It pulled me straight back in. The main character is so charismatic and just makes the whole story really enjoyable to read. It is very different to anything else I’ve picked up lately. It’s dark and supernatural, but with this subtle humour running through it that makes it even harder to put down. It has been so good getting back into Ross’s world, and it’s definitely made me even more excited for what’s next. (KS)
Delightfully twisty
I found the House of Wraiths, the second adventure for Ross Ferris, a highly entertaining story. The plot is delightfully twisty; with turns and surprises along the way that kept me interested from start to finish. Ross has grown in his environment. We see his latest struggles on the temporal plane, both the serious and the humorous, with him being pulled between the demands of Heaven and Hell. Ross himself is an engaging character and his interactions with the rest of the cast of characters helps move the narrative along nicely. Denarii has produced a fitting tale to follow on from The Reluctant Reaper. (SW)
“what happens next if…..”
Once again Denarii strikes a delicate balance as she continues to follow the fate of Ross, the ex-highwayman; who after his demise ended up in Hell. The development and changing relationships between the characters is insightful. The ongoing conflicts between Heaven and Hell is subtle and has twists and turns as they both compete for lost souls. Ross, having found a safe haven, is forced to flee and has to stay ahead, both physically and mentally, of those chasing him. He again is tasked with visiting heaven as a go-between. Meanwhile, working behind the scenes, a rogue daemon attempts to engineer a war between Heaven & Hell. Denarii leaves us wanting to know “what happens next if…..” (JS)
What a rush of action!
I have just finished this installment, and what a rush of action! Hardly time to catch my breath. The tale moves on at a rapid place, carrying you on relentlessly forward. I found myself feeling sympathy for Caffiaes and his angel (even if Caffiaes is a daemon!). Unlike my view of Claude! He is definitely a spiteful piece of work! If only Ross and Caffiaes could find some way to save Doris?? Ross, as ever, is the unwitting do-gooding rogue, unable to turn his back on friends (was he ever the ‘bad man’ from the original book?), he seems to be developing a really ‘good’ side to his personality, which feels out of place for a former Hell Hound, but is so endearing. Looking forward to the third one in the series. (SW)
Definitely a page turner
Another excellent book by Denarii Peters. The book is well written and is definitely a page turner with a sinister plot to unravel. There are also some very funny parts. It is very clever in the way that it develops characters and hints at real life events. The main character Ross is very likeable even though he seems to cause many of the problems he then has to solve. It is intriguing that he seems to have some sort of immunity from the demons. I love the way Jerome proves to be the one with the ideas and is central to the plot, when he is there by accident. The plot builds and there is a twist at the end. I can’t wait for book 3. (SS)

In this, her second novel in the Ross Ferris trilogy, Denarii Peters maintains the suspense and intrigue that characterised The Reluctant Reaper. The reader is pitched back into the disturbing world of Daemons and Angels, with it being far from obvious which are the real good guys. Ross, however, remains in character throughout as a brave and reluctant hero, albeit with some very human flaws. This very readable book engaged my attention throughout and I found I also cared very much what happened in this strange world between good and evil. I particularly admired the touches of humour that provide such an effective contrast with the prevailing darkness while maintaining the overall suspense. This is a difficult trick for an author to pull off and Denarii succeeds magnificently. If you don’t read this book, you will have missed a treat! (HC)
